  16. -----------------
  17. This release of Microsoft Windows NT 3.1 U.S. Service Pack 3 contains all 
  18. the components that have been fixed since the retail release of Windows NT 
  19. 3.1 and Windows NT Advanced Server 3.1.  The Service Pack is easy to apply
  20. from within Windows NT and changes only those files that were originally 
  21. set up on the Windows NT or Windows NT Advanced Server system.  Service
  22. Pack releases are cumulative:  they contain all previous fixes, as well as
  23. any new fixes made to the system.

  26. 2.0  Installation Instructions for the Windows NT U.S. Service Pack
  27. -------------------------------------------------------------------
  28. Installing the Service Pack from a floppy disk:
  29. 1.  Insert Service Pack Disk 1 into the floppy drive.
  30. 2.  At the Windows NT Command Prompt, change to that floppy drive (that is, 
  31.     A: or B:) and type UPDATE.
  32. 3.  Follow the instructions given on the screen.
  33.  
  34. Installing the Service Pack from a CD-ROM:
  35. 1.  Insert the Service Pack CD-ROM disk into the CD-ROM drive.
  36. 2.  At the Windows NT Command Prompt, change to that CD-ROM drive, then
  37.     change to the i386, MIPS, or ALPHA directory (depending upon whether
  38.     you have an Intel, MIPS, or ALPHA AXP CPU), and type UPDATE.
  39. 3.  Follow the instructions given on the screen.
  40.  
  41. Installing the Service Pack from a network drive:
  42. 1.  At the Windows NT Command Prompt, type the command to connect to the 
  43.     network drive on which the Service Pack files reside.
  44. 2.  Change to that network drive and type UPDATE.
  45. 3.  Follow the instructions given on the screen.

  48. 2.1  User Notes
  49. ---------------
  50.  
  51. *** Installing Service Pack 3 on a Dual-Boot computer with Windows NT 3.5
  52.  
  53. If your computer is dual-booting Windows NT 3.1 and Windows NT 3.5, you
  54. must perform the following steps before you install Service Pack 3:
  55.  
  56. 1. Copy the files NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM in your root drive to NTLDR.SAV 
  57.    and NTDETECT.SAV.
  58.  
  59. 2. Install the Service Pack.
  60.  
  61. 3. Copy NTLDR.SAV to NTLDR, and NTDETECT.SAV to NTDETECT.COM.
  62.  
  63. This will allow your machine to continue dual-booting both versions of
  64. Windows NT.
  65.  
  66.  
  67. *** Running the File System Update from Windows NT 3.5
  68.  
  69. Once you have installed Service Pack 3, you should not install the file
  70. system update for Windows NT 3.1 from Windows NT 3.5.
  71. Service Pack 3 contains all the fixes that are in the Windows NT 3.5
  72. file system update, as well as other fixes.

  74.  
  75. *** Issues with MS-DOS-based Communications Programs
  76.  
  77. If you experience difficulties with MS-DOS-based communications programs
  78. after installing Service Pack 3, change the configuration of the program to
  79. enable software flow control (XON/XOFF) instead of hardware flow control
  80. (RTS/CTS).  Changing this parameter has been found to correct problems with
  81. these applications in most cases.
  82.

  84. *** Installing the Service Pack on a System with an OEM supplied HAL.DLL
  85.  
  86. If your Windows NT system uses a HAL.DLL supplied by an OEM (one that was 
  87. not installed from the Microsoft Windows NT 3.1 disk set) you need to follow 
  88. the steps below to reinstall the OEM HAL after the Service Pack Update 
  89. program has been run, but before the machine is rebooted.  If you do not 
  90. reinstall the OEM HAL properly, your system may not boot after installing
  91. the Service Pack (because the OEM HAL will have been replaced by a HAL from 
  92. the Service Pack). If this happens, use your Emergency Repair Disk to repair 
  93. your system, then follow the steps below.
  94.  
  95. 1.  Before the Update program is run, copy the HAL.DLL file to HAL.OEM to
  96.     save it.  On an x86 machine, HAL.DLL is located in the %windir%\system32
  97.     directory.  On a MIPS or Alpha machine, the following command should
  98.     locate it:
  99.  
  100.       DIR /S %windir%\..\hal.dll
  101.  
  102. 2.  After the Update program has been run, but before you have it reboot
  103.     your system, start a Command Prompt window, and restore the HAL.DLL you
  104.     saved in step (1).  On an x86 machine,
  105.  
  106.       CD %windir%\system32
  107.       COPY HAL.OEM HAL.DLL
  108.  
  109. 3.  Now switch back to the Update program and have it reboot your system.
  110.  
  111.  
  112. *** Configuring the NWLink Transport
  113.  
  114. When configuring the NWLink transport using the Network option in Control 
  115. Panel, you must enter the Network Number as a hexadecimal value rather than 
  116. as a decimal value as stated in the Help file. 
  117.  
  118.  
  119. *** Converting Macintosh Filenames to Win32 Filenames
  120.  
  121. In general, the Windows NT (Win32) interface can view and use
  122. filenames created by a Macintosh client.  There are two
  123. exceptions, where the filename is an illegal Win32 filename:
  124.  
  125.     The Macintosh client creates a filename that ends with a period.
  126.  
  127.     The Macintosh client creates a filename that ends with a blank space.
  128.  
  129. In both of these cases, the Windows NT interface displays the filename 
  130. with a thick vertical bar (|) or question mark (?) character replacing 
  131. the final period or space.  Only the last character is replaced.  
  132. For example:
  133.  
  134.     Macintosh filename         Windows NT displays the filename as . . .
  135.     ------------------         -----------------------------------------
  136.     An important file.         An important file|
  137.     Very important file ...    Very important file ..|
  138.     One space at the end       One space at the end|
  139.     Two spaces at the end      Two spaces at the end |
  140.  
  141. You can view and use the converted filenames in the Windows NT interface.  
  142. You cannot view and use them from the Command Prompt (CMD.EXE).  A Win16 
  143. application that converts long filenames to the 8.3 format can convert 
  144. these filenames to the 8.3 format.
  145.  
  146. For Macintosh filenames that already exist on the Services For Macintosh 
  147. server, before this updated functionality, the server will rename such 
  148. files the first time they are accessed.
  149.  
  150. The final character is mapped to an unused UNICODE character (0xF000+xx).  
  151. Windows NT does this same mapping for characters that are illegal in the 
  152. NTFS file system.
  153.  
  154.  
  155. *** Updating Printer Drivers Installed for a Different Platform
  156.  
  157. The Service Pack only updates printer drivers for the platform you install 
  158. it on.  For example: If you update an Intel-based print server that you have 
  159. MIPS computers printing to, it needs to have the MIPS version of the printer 
  160. driver installed. The Service Pack only copies the Intel-based printer 
  161. driver to the print server. In this case, you need to copy over the 
  162. appropriate driver by hand.
  163.  
  164. The following procedure describes how to install the PostScript printer
  165. driver by hand.
  166.  
  167. 1.  Rename PSCRIPT.DLL and PSCRPTUI.DLL in the directory below to
  168.     PSCRIPT.OLD and PSCRPTUI.OLD
  169.  
  170.       system32\spool\drivers\<platform>
  171.  
  172.     where <platform> is w32mips, w32alpha, or w32x86.
  173.  
  174. 2.  For MIPS or ALPHA drivers, copy the PSCRIPT.DLL and PSCRPTUI.DLL files
  175.     from the MIPS or ALPHA subdirectories on the CD-ROM to the subdirectory
  176.     in Step 1 above. For Intel-based drivers, type
  177.  
  178.       expand -r PSCRIPT.DL_ <subdirectory from step 1>
  179.       expand -r PSCRPTUI.DL_ <subdirectory from step 1>
  180.  
  181.     from the i386 subdirectory on the CD-ROM where <subdirectory> is the
  182.     subdirectory from Step 1.
  183.  
  184.  
  185. *** Emergency Repair Disk
  186.  
  187. If it is necessary to use the Windows NT Emergency Repair Disk to repair
  188. your Windows NT system at some time after you apply the Service Pack, you
  189. will need to re-apply the Service Pack after the repair is completed.  This
  190. is because the Emergency Repair Disk repairs your system by restoring your
  191. original Windows NT setup.  After the repair has completed, simply follow
  192. the above Installation Instructions to re-apply the Service Pack.

  194.  
  195. *** Adding New Components to the System
  196.  
  197. If new software or hardware components are changed or added to your system
  198. after you have applied the Service Pack, it will be necessary to re-apply
  199. the Service Pack.  This is because the files taken from the original Windows
  200. NT disk set may not be equivalent to the files on the Service Pack disk set.
  201. It is not possible to install new components directly from the Service Pack
  202. media (such as a new keyboard or printer driver).  New components must be
  203. installed from the original product media.
  204.  
  205.  
  206. *** Command Reference Colors
  207.  
  208. Some commands in the Command Reference (NTCMDS.HLP) list of commands are not
  209. visible if your system colors are set to Window Text = white and Window
  210. Background = black.  Change your Windows Background to a lighter color to 
  211. see all the commands in the list.
  212.  
  213.  
  214. *** Previous Versions of NTBackup
  215.  
  216. Backup tapes created with the version of NTBackup shipping with this Service
  217. Pack cannot be restored or read with versions of NTBackup shipped prior to
  218. Service Pack 2.  However, tapes created with previous versions of NTBackup 
  219. can be read and restored by the version of NTBackup in this Service Pack. 
  220. NTBackup now uses Unicode whenever it writes to tape, which was not 
  221. understood by previous versions of NTBackup.
  222.

  224. *** Previous Versions of Services For Macintosh (SFM)
  225.  
  226. To correct a problem with file names ending in a space or period, a change 
  227. was made to the Services For Macintosh software which makes earlier versions 
  228. of this software unable to correctly read Macintosh file names on the 
  229. Windows NT Advanced Server system.  The new Services For Macintosh software 
  230. will alter the NTFS file name to allow Macintosh clients to properly view 
  231. them.  This means that once you update your Services For Macintosh system 
  232. files with this Service Pack, versions of the SFM software prior to Service 
  233. Pack 2 will not function properly if installed on the system.

  236. *** Installing Symbol Files from the CD-ROM
  237.  
  238. To install the symbol files corresponding to the new binaries in Service
  239. Pack 3, do the following (assuming your CD-ROM drive is D:, your symbol 
  240. files are located in the C:\WINNT\SYMBOLS directory, and you are installing 
  241. the files for an x86 machine):
  242.  
  243.     XCOPY /S /U /D D:\SUPPORT\DEBUG\I386\SYMBOLS C:\WINNT\SYMBOLS
  244.  
  245. This will copy the Service Pack 3 .DBG files over the existing versions of
  246. these files.  The XCOPY command shown will copy only those .DBG files that 
  247. are already installed (/U switch), and only those with a more recent time-
  248. date stamp (/D switch).
